Today, the Black Contractors Association Alabama Chapter pauses with heavy hearts to honor the life, leadership, and enduring legacy of Mr. Larry James a man whose impact resonates far beyond the work he accomplished or the roads he paved.
Mr. James, Founder of James Paving and a proud founding member of the BCAAC, stood as a pillar in Alabama’s contracting community. His reputation was built not only on the exceptional quality of his work, but on the integrity, humility, and generosity with which he served others. Larry was a businessman who understood that true success is measured not simply by profits or projects, but by the people whose lives are strengthened through your leadership.
For decades, Larry used his platform to champion the advancement of Black contractors across the state. He believed deeply in creating opportunities where none existed, mentoring fellow builders, advocating for fair access, and ensuring Black excellence had a rightful place within Alabama’s development landscape. His influence helped shape the foundation upon which BCAAC stands today.
To know Larry was to know a man of quiet power steady, dependable, and deeply committed to his community. Whether he was paving a roadway, advising a young contractor, or standing shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow members, he carried himself with humility and purpose. His kindness was not performative; it was lived, daily, in the way he treated people.
As we grieve his passing, we also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. We extend our deepest prayers and heartfelt condolences to his loving wife, Mrs. Britania James, his children, and the entire James family. May they find comfort in knowing how profoundly Larry shaped the lives and futures of so many within our industry.
Larry’s legacy lives on in the roads he paved, in the companies he inspired, and in the generations of contractors who continue to follow the path he helped create.
Rest in power, Brother Larry. Your work endures, and your impact will be remembered for years to come.
